The Three Peaks Challenge (Video)
As part of our Summer of Sport, on 12 & 13 June twenty eight people from Withy King completed the national Three Peaks Challenge in aid of the firm’s chosen charities, The RUH Forever Friend’s Appeal, The Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Headway Oxford.
Everyone survived, but not without a lot of pain and some impressive injuries along the way!
This is how it happened:
Peak 1: The four teams collected their hire vehicles at Glasgow Airport and headed to Fort William, the starting point for the first climb. They navigated their way through snowfields and thick fog to reach the top of Ben Nevis, the biggest of the three peaks at 1344 metres.
Peak 2: After Ben Nevis, the teams made the 250 mile journey to Wasdale Head in Cumbria to start the climb of Scafell Pike at 3.30am in pitch black and after virtually no sleep.
Peak 3: By the time the teams arrived at Pen-y-Pass to begin Snowdon, the final peak, the weather had improved significantly – meaning they had to climb Wales’s highest mountain in 24°C heat. But a video speaks louder than any words:
The first team to complete the challenge did so in 22hrs 6 minutes, scaling Ben Nevis in 4h 11mins, Scafell Pike in 3h 3mins and Snowdon in 3h 16mins. Tom Gilman and Nicola Cutler were the next to finish, beating the 24 hour target by running the final leg of the descent!
So far the Three Peaks event has raised over £9,000, a great achievement. The event was fully funded by the firm, so every penny donated is going to our chosen charities: RUH Forever Friends Appeal, Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Headway Oxford.
Chris Kane said: “It was a tremendous team effort and a great experience for everyone involved. A lack of sleep, physical and mental exhaustion and several minor injuries provided plenty of challenges along the way, but I am immensely proud of the way everyone pulled together and got through it. We are delighted to have raised so much and grateful to Withy King for covering our costs and making it possible.”
We are hugely grateful to everyone who has helped to raise this, whether through walking or driving during the Three Peaks Challenge or through making donations.
