Strategic Plan for Synthetic Biology

The plan recognises the importance of synthetic biology to the future of the UK economy as one of the UK Governments “Eight Great Technologies” and aims to accelerate the commercial translation of products and services with clear public benefit building off the strength of the UK’s research base.

It focuses on the following five key areas of inter-related importance:

o   Accelerating industrialisation and commercialisation;

o   Maximising the capability of the innovation pipeline;

o   Building an expert workforce;

o   Developing A Supportive Business Environment; and

o   Building value from national and international partnership.

The plan highlights the recent ranking of the UK as one of the most innovative countries in the world and sets out strong recommendations for building international commercial and academic relationships with organisations in other countries with similar skills.
