Stepping up to the green challenge
Last week was Green Week across our offices. We focussed on fun, small behaviour changes to make a big difference – including the way we commute to work to reduce our carbon footprint and make healthier choices.
Facilities Manager Oxfordshire & Wiltshire, Gyles Wiggins said: “I traded in my 1.4 litre Harley Davidson motorcycle for public transport on a 16 litre Van Hool bus. Buses and coaches now have to meet the strict Euro 6 emissions regulations and with rail travel rapidly moving away from diesel powered trains in favour of electric hybrids, public transport has never been greener. In all honesty, I would have to make some different lifestyle choices to make the bus work for me, factoring in the additional travel time. However, I did value the ability to work on the go, with most services offering charging sockets and free Wi-Fi.”
Commenting on his change in commute, John Pengilley, solicitor in our Private Client team, said: “I took a different option to Gyles, instead choosing to cycle. For me, it is more cost effective than the bus, saving me around £55 a month. I am also lucky to have really good cycle paths in Swindon.”
Anna Weekes, paralegal in our Personal Injury team adds: “The bus also wasn’t for me – anyone who has travelled in Oxford will relate to the cost, traffic and stress! Cycling to work along the towpath means I took in the beautiful sights and arrived at the office stress free, refreshed and ready to start my day. I have already seen improvements in my general health, I gain two and a half hours a week and I’m £20 a week better off. This is definitely a permanent change for me.”
