Spotlight on cyber security for South West businesses

Cyber Security Roundtable

Royds Withy King recently partnered with High Growth Knowledge Company (HGKC), Milsted Langdon and Bluefin Group to host a cyber security roundtable event at the Bath Priory Hotel. Senior leaders of ten successful South West SMEs came together to explore the collective understanding of the threat of cyber-attack, brought into sharp focus after the recent ransomware attacks on private and public organisations in the UK and elsewhere in the world.

The group discussed what businesses can do practically and realistically to protect themselves, recognising that there isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution and that threats aren’t just about the technology.

Technology & Media partner Jessica Bent and Employment partner James Sage attended the event to learn from local businesses and share their own professional experiences. Jessica commented: “We were delighted to co-host the roundtable. It was an excellent opportunity for business leaders to engage with their peers and discuss how the approach to data security needs to vary according to the type of organisation and the sector it operates in.  With the advent of the General Data Protection Regulation (which comes into force in May 2018), businesses are increasingly recognising that data protection and security need to be dealt with at Board level otherwise the repercussions could be quite significant.”

Ian Lloyd, partner at co-sponsors Milsted Langdon, said: “Recent events have highlighted just how vulnerable even the largest organisations can be to attacks by cyber criminals, which is why businesses of all size, in particular SMEs, need to keep their wits about them. As accountants dealing with sensitive information, we are all too aware of the risks out there, which is why we incorporate additional software and systems into our services to ensure the data we hold is sufficiently protected. I am glad that the lessons we have all learned during this process were able to be shared by those who attended this fantastic roundtable event.”

The roundtable forms part of ‘HGKC High Growth Workshops 2017’, which feature interactive discussions on key challenges facing businesses today. A series of blogs on the key topics covered during the cyber security roundtable will be published in due course.
