Royds team attend British Spanish Lawyers’ Association Annual Conference

The event was held this month at Palma de Mallorca, Spain at the invitation of the organising committee.

The well received talks took place on the morning of Saturday, May 16th and were respectively on A Comparative Study of the Personal Insolvency regimes in England and Spain; and An Employment Law update on legislation and recent case law decisions.

The conference, which this year was kindly hosted by Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Baleares, is the pre-eminent forum for legal professionals from the United Kingdom and Spain to debate comparative law between the jurisdictions and emerging trends in the provision of legal services to businesses and individuals.

David’s talk highlighted the major differences between the two insolvency jurisdictions and the apparent flexibility of the English process compared to the more rigid approach taken by the Spanish courts.

However it is apparent that changes afoot in Spanish law driven by draft EU legislation will soon bring it much closer to the position in the United Kingdom in the near future.

David’s co-speaker this year was Amparo Arbáizar of Amoros Arbáizar’s Alicante office.

Gemma’s talk focused on recent changes to Employment laws in the United Kingdom and in particular proposed future restrictions to zero hours contracts and the introduction of Shared Parental Leave. Gemma’s co-speaker was Jorge Caballero Alvarez of Ernest & Young’s Barcelona office.

David and Gemma found the conference highly educational and a wonderful opportunity to meet other brilliant legal professionals based in Spain. Royds LLP has a strong presence acting for businesses and individuals based in Spain. It has fee earners who are fluent in Spanish and are familiar with the endlessly surprising legal and cultural differences between the two countries.
