Pimlico Plumbers – what the Supreme Court decision means for the hospitality sector

“The Pimlico decision does not set a new precedent that will significantly affect the way in which businesses in the catering and hospitality sector engage staff.

“That said, the publicity surrounding the case may well lead people to think hard about whether the way they are contracted amounts to ‘sham self-employment’ and that may well lead to further cases.  The Supreme Court’s decision is fact specific and every business will differ.

“And then there is the Taylor Review into working practices which said that employment should be ‘fair and decent’ and following which the Government has committed to clarifying the issue in law.  The tide is turning.”
