Mumford Bailey & Preston employee contracts malignant mesothelioma

Mumford Bailey & Preston were a firm of plumbers and heating engineers who specialised in refitting boiler houses, removing old boilers and heating systems, in order to fit new ones. The majority of the boiler houses David worked in contained asbestos paste lagging over chicken wire, which he stripped before replacing the boilers and pipework with a new boiler and heating system.  David remembered the asbestos dust being so thick, that it was like working in a snowstorm.

David was referred for chemotherapy treatment, but became extremely poorly very quickly. He was very nauseous and unwell with the chemotherapy treatment.  David’s wife Debbie, had worked for most of her life and had a good pension of her own.  Prior to David developing mesothelioma, she had planned to go back to work full-time once her grandson was older and didn’t need her around as much to look after him.  As a result, Debbie didn’t have a dependency claim on David’s income, so it was very important that his case was settled in his lifetime.
