Claim for mesothelioma settled within 3 months of instruction

Our detailed knowledge, immediate contact with the defendants and instruction of a medical expert, and rapid valuation of the claim secured a settlement for Mr S within 3 months of him first instructing us.

Mr S had worked as an electrician for many years at the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Aldermaston. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma several months before he instructed us, but had delayed seeking legal advice because he had never knowingly come into contact with asbestos. His employers had never told him that many of the materials he was working with on a daily basis contained asbestos. However, our knowledge of the working practices at the AWE and previous experience in bringing claims against them meant we could establish this, even though Mr S was personally unaware of it at the time.

We immediately contacted his previous employers and sought his medical records and other documents we needed in support of his claim. As soon as we received a supportive medical report we advised Mr S about the likely level of compensation and obtained his instructions to settle the claim as soon as possible and to make an immediate offer to the defendants. After a short period of negotiation the claim settled for over £150k.
Mr S was delighted with the speedy settlement and the amount he received. It meant he could treat his children and grandchildren while he was still well enough. He sent a lovely thank you letter saying our hard work had meant he could “bring a smile to his grandchildren’s faces.”

Helen Childs comments, “This claim illustrated the importance of seeking specialist advice if you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. You may think your claim is a difficult one, but an experienced lawyer will have knowledge of what sort of work might have brought you into contact with asbestos. They will also be able to evaluate your claim and seek the evidence in support quickly, which means that settlement of mesothelioma claims is possible in a matter of months. It was a privilege to help Mr S and his family at this very difficult time of their lives.”
