Case against cancer surgeon hit by delays

Five women are pursuing a High Court damages claim against Ian Paterson, who is alleged

to have carried out needless procedures after misdiagnosing breast cancer.

The women claim they were negligently treated by Mr Paterson, who also faces claims that in other cases he performed incomplete mastectomies, leading to cancer returning.

At a recent hearing, the High Court heard that the surgeon “lacked the capacity” to instruct his lawyers and the case was adjourned for eight weeks.

Mr Paterson worked at Solihull Hospital, in the West Midlands, as an NHS consultant and also performed surgery at two private hospitals in the region.

The five women who have taken legal action are thought to be just the “tip of the iceberg” of those who have given notice of claims. As many as 400 are thought to be considering compensation.
