Mermaids, a charity which supports children, young people, and their families in relation to gender non-conformity, has been fined £25,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) after personal information relating to 550 people, including children, was available online for almost three years.

UK data protection law will change on 25 May 2018 when the Data Protection Act 1998 will be replaced as a result of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which will introduce a greater harmonisation across all EU member states. In a landmark ruling, UK retailer Argos (UK Argos), the catalogue shopping giant that is owned by the Sainsbury’s supermarket chain, recently lost its claim for trade mark infringement and passing off through the domain name argos.com against US software company Argos Systems (US Argos), which trades in North and South America.
