£40,000 for negligent treatment of pressure sore at Southmead Hospital

RWK Goodman’s Ali Cloak secured a £40,000 settlement for the estate of a 71 year old man, G, in relation to the negligent treatment of a pressure ulcer at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

On his admission to Southmead Hospital for surgery to his right ankle, a pre-existing pressure ulcer on G’s buttock had been recorded. Despite successful surgery to G’s right ankle, the bed sore failed to heal and G’s condition gradually deteriorated until his death, some eight months after the surgery.

Expert evidence found that whilst it was the case that G was at high risk of pressure sores, his medical history demonstrated that his vulnerability to pressure sores was manageable with appropriate treatment and advice.

The compensation was awarded by way of a lump sum of £40,000, which reflected G’s severe and avoidable pain and discomfort in the months leading to his death.
