First Same-Sex Church Wedding
During July last year, the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act came into force; and since the end of last month (March) same sex couples throughout England and Wales have been legally able to marry.
However, whilst same-sex marriages can take place within civic reception halls and other premises with a marriage licence, those religious organisations who wish to conduct same-sex marriages are required to “opt in” – and it is believed the same first same-sex marriage to take place within a religious organisation, in the UK, took place over the weekend.
According to reports published yesterday (March 14th), a same-sex couple from Bournemouth became the first same-sex couple to get married within a religious building.
Following the service both the couple and Reverend took pride in the marriage; with the Reverend stating that the Church had been blessing same-sex couples for a number of years.
Whilst the latest reports have revealed that the first same-sex marriage within a religious organisation took place over the weekend, for those same-sex couples who wish to discuss marriage, or converting their civil partnership into a legally recognised marriage, our family law solicitors in London can assist.
