Firm agrees to pay penalty after bribery breaches are uncovered

Posted by ,

A UK business this month agreed to pay more than £2million after it discovered an illegal bribery operation within its own organisation.

Glasgow-based Braid Logistics had discovered “potentially dishonest” activities in connection with a couple of contracts it had been involved with.

The investigation that followed confirmed that there had been breaches of the Bribery Act 2010 – a flagship piece of legislation which was introduced to curb corrupt practices in business.

Braid subsequently dismissed the members of staff who had been involved in the activity and reported the case to the Crown Office.

The firm’s group financial director Alasdair Davidson said: “The activities uncovered in this case were the unauthorised actions of a small number of individuals who are no longer employed by the company.

“Braid UK’s rapid and thorough response to these pursuits and the wholesale changes we have now made in our company’s systems led to our case being conducted on civil grounds.”

Speaking after the penalty was agreed, Mr Davidson said he hoped that the payment would draw a line under the matter and the handling of the affair demonstrated that the firm had a zero-tolerance policy towards breach of company laws.
