Posted by ,

At Royds LLP, our Dispute Resolution department has a first-rate reputation for handling cases ranging from insolvency proceedings to breaches of copyright. Liaising closely with other departments, our experienced team of practitioners represents corporations, small and medium-sized businesses and individuals.

Our solicitors – based in the City of London – are also available to work alongside law firms who don’t have a Litigation department of their own. Areas where we can assist include:

Business Disputes

At Royds, our team has collective experience of running cases at all levels of the judicial system in England & Wales.

Sectors where Royds has particular expertise include airlines, banking and finance, jewellery, luxury goods and property, although we have acted for all sorts of companies both in the UK and overseas.

Our commercial litigators are led by Stewart Wilkinson, who has almost 35 years’ experience and is currently the firm’s Managing Partner.

Stewart advises a range of clients from SMEs to large quoted companies and foreign enterprises on all aspects of commercial litigation and arbitration.

His key clients have included the State Bank of India, Air India, Air France and Monsoon.

Intellectual Property

Royds’ Intellectual Property team is led by Stephen Welfare. He has been with the firm for more than 20 years and is an expert in contentious IP disputes.

Working alongside the British Jewellers Association and British Travelgoods and Accessories Association, Stephen is responsible for the operation of the Copywatch IP protection scheme.

Over the years he has also acted for individuals in the world of media and sport, as well as businesses such as Smyths Toys, BHS, Monsoon Accessorize, Leatherman Tool Group Inc and the Christie Group.

Our team has represented clients from a wide range of industries, but has handled a particularly large number of cases relating to the jewellery, luxury goods and marketing industries.

Royds is a member of Interleges and the Intellectual Property Lawyers Association.

Landlord and Tenant

Our team handles a whole range of matters including commercial lease disputes, rent and service charge collections, adverse possession claims and dilapidation claims.

We act for a wide range of owners and tenants, including retail chains, investment funds, charities and private landlords.

Our property litigation is handled by Chris Rodda, who qualified almost 30 years ago and has been a Partner at Royds since 1995.

Chris, a member of the Property Litigation Association, has built up a substantial client base, primarily through recommendations, and represents both individuals and businesses across a variety of sectors.

Insurance Litigation

The firm’s insurance litigation is led by James Millar-Craig, who has over 30 years’ experience and handles both individual and company group PHI claims.

James has particular expertise dealing with ME/CFS disputes and is recognised as an expert in this field by the ME Association and Action for ME. Over the course of his career, he has acted for high-net-worth individuals and a number of media personalities.

In recent years, Royds has succeeded with claims against some of the biggest names in the insurance industry, including Unum, Resolution, Liverpool Victoria, Friends of Life, Aviva, Canada Life and Zurich.

The firm can also handle critical illness policies, health insurance policies and insurance mis-selling disputes.
