Decree Nisi granted in high-profile divorce case

The couple have been embroiled in a £440million divorce battle for more than two years following the breakdown of their relationship.

Dr Khoo had last month failed in an attempt to halt legal proceedings in England, arguing that the divorce hearing should be held in his native Malaysia. It is understood he was concerned that the UK courts were likely to hand Ms Chai a more generous settlement.

Miss Chai had successfully made the case that the couple previously lived in Hertfordshire before parting company and there was a legitimate reason for the UK’s courts to adjudicate.

Dr Khoo bought a majority stake in Laura Ashley, the well-known fashion and furnishing retailer, in the late 1990s and the chain generates sales of more than £280million a year.

Attention will now turn to how his estate is divided.
