Compensation recovered for client exposed to asbestos at Brymbo Steelworks
We were instructed by our client, Mr S, to pursue a claim for compensation after he received the devastating news that he had mesothelioma.
His daughter initially contacted another firm of Solicitors on his behalf who deal with Industrial Disease claims. They declined the case.
Maggie Powell visited Mr S at his home on the 30th November 2017 and was able to advise Mr S from the outset that he had very good prospects of succeeding with a claim.
Mr S worked for Brymbo Steelworks in the village of Brymbo, near Wrexham. He worked in the melt shop where scrap materials, some of which contained asbestos e.g. lagged pipework, obsolete boilers were melted down in the furnace to make steel. The scrap material was deposited in the melt shop by tipper truck. Tipping the loads of scrap material generated a huge amount of dust in to the atmosphere. The process of moving the scrap into the furnace, by crane, would again disturb materials and generate dust, including asbestos, into the atmosphere.
A letter of claim was sent to Corus Engineering Steels (UK) Ltd on the 18th December 2017.An admission of liability was made on the 15th March 2018 followed by an interim payment of £50,000.00. Following negotiations the claim finally settled in June 2018. Very sadly Mr S has since died. He was a lovely man and will be a huge loss to his family.
His daughter, who cared for him with support from other family members said ”Amazing service. Maggie Powell was a wonderful solicitor, who although makes sure she does her job she also takes thought and care with the family as well. Although we could not do anything about dad’s illness with the compensation you made him happy as he was able to ensure his children and grandchildren were in a better financial position when he passed away.”
