Comedian’s family could lose thousands because he failed to make a Will

Posted by ,

A high-profile case has drawn fresh attention to the dangers of not making a Will.

The comedian Rik Mayall, best known for shows such as The Young Ones and The New Statesman, died suddenly in June last year. He had suffered a heart attack after returning from his regular run.

But it was revealed a couple of weeks ago that the funnyman had not left instructions on how his £1.2million estate should be divided up.

This is despite the fact that he had previously almost died in 1998 after suffering serious head injuries in a quad bike accident.

The fact that no valid Will has been made could lead to complications and a substantial inheritance tax bill for his long-standing wife Barbara and the couple’s three children.

The estate will now be subject to intestacy rules.

By making a Will you decide which of your family, friends or favourite charities inherits your assets. It also gives you a chance to disinherit the Chancellor of the Exchequer, by ensuring that your estate is left in the most tax effective way.
