Changes to Family Law Courts Introduced

One of the changes coming into force today, is the introduction of a single Family C ourt, which replaces the previous three tier court system, and will preside over divorce and child custody matters.

Another reform introduced today is that the requirement to attend a mediation meeting before filing an application for private law children proceedings or proceedings for a financial remedy now has statutory force
Under the changes, courts will be required to know that mediation has been considered before they can proceed with any relevant application; and it is hoped that the introduction of mandatory mediation will help reduce the number of cases which end up before the family courts.
