Emily Curtis – HR Advisor

Name: Emily Curtis

Role: HR Advisor, Support

Office: Midland Bridge House, Bath

It was 2008, just before the recession hit, and I had to find a year’s work placement as part of my Business with HR degree at University of West England. I was competing with the 100 other students from my course at UWE had to find an organisation that would take me on in their HR department and allow me to write my dissertation around the experience.

As I live in the Bath area, I applied to Withy King. Not just because it was a local firm but also because of its’ excellent reputation in the area and I was interested in seeing how HR worked within the legal sector.

I was really lucky to obtain a year’s placement at Withy King as it hadn’t been something they had offered in the past. I joined at an extremely busy and exciting time for the Firm as they were growing rapidly and were in the process of merging with a firm in Oxford. Even though everyone was incredibly busy, they were always supportive and approachable and always made time to help and support me whenever I needed.

I left Withy King after my year’s placement to complete my degree having learnt so much, not just about HR but also about the working world.

Then the call came, just before my final exams, asking if I would like to become a full time, permanent member of staff once I’d finished my degree! I was so unbelievably excited! I hadn’t even finished University and I had been offered a job in the area I loved and at such a respected organisation!

In June 2010 I joined Withy King permanently, 4 years later and I’m still here and still thoroughly enjoying it!

Everyone is so friendly and approachable and although we’re growing into a large firm it still feels like a close knit team. We’re all there to support each other and help Royds Withy King to fulfil its’ ambitions. And it seems to be working! We’ve just been accepted into the Times Top 100 and with the merger to become Royds Withy King, more exciting plans and projects around the corner!

Within my role I’m given new opportunities all the time to enhance my knowledge and skills and interact with people from all over the business from new secretarial recruits to Senior Partners. I am also an active member of the Charities Committee and am in the process of arranging the “Great Royds Withy King Bake Off” to raise money for our 3 chosen charities. It’s great to be able to give some of my time back to worthy causes and be supported by the Firm.

At the moment I am being supported and funded to continue my HR qualifications through the Experience Assessment route.  With so much on the Royds Withy King agenda, I’m very excited about the future!
