Campaign encourages people to seek professional advice in family matters

The campaign – Use a Professional, Use a Solicitor - encourages the public to enlist the services of a law firm, instead of turning to unregulated providers.

Andrew Caplen, the Law Society’s president, said: “Our latest campaign reminds the public that highly qualified, professionally trained solicitors are the best people to speak to for legal advice.

“Using a solicitor gives you the assurance you are dealing with a professional who is properly regulated and insured.

“The growth of unregulated and do-it-yourself legal services means consumers are exposed to non-professional advice, which can be more of a hindrance than a help.”

Mr Caplen has previously voiced concerns about an increasing reliance on “litigants in person” or McKenzie friends. In the case of divorce courts, this has significantly slowed down the legal process.

Now, in an attempt to deter people from trying to cut corners, case studies of those who have benefitted from a trip to solicitors will be widely publicised.

The high-profile campaign will make use of social media and the internet, as well as more traditional adverts at bus stops and train stations.

Family law is one of six areas of practice being promoted by the Law Society as part of the campaign, alongside Conveyancing, Personal injury, Wills and probate, Business law and Criminal law.
