Butterfly effect

The ghost of Madam Butterfly told the story of her tragic love affair with a cowardly American Naval officer in the intimate setting of Bury Court opera last night. Dressed in a torn white gown with her black hair escaping to her waist, soprano Mamie Matsuda seduced the audience with her powerful and haunting performance of her 15 year old self as she is duped into love and then cruelly abandoned by Officer Pinkerton, Elgan Llyr Thomas. Is to die with honour the only solution to her situation as Pinkerton and his new American wife decide to take her young son?

Royds is proud to support Bury Court Opera founded by John Coke and Suzanne Lemieux in 2007. The aim of the opera company which stages opera by talented young artists, directors, designers and musicians in its beautiful converted barn near Farnham, Surrey, is to show that small has the potential to be truly beautiful; creating greater intimacy, intensity and impact.
