A pair of Bath entrepreneurs has created one of the largest dance spaces in the city with the help of local law firm Withy King.
Brothers Rod and Max Johnson have launched Baroque nightclub (formerly Back to Mine) in Bladud Buildings with the support of the commercial property, corporate and employment teams at Withy King.
Rod Johnson, who has a good understanding of the nightclub business from previous experience, explained: “It took a long time to get the financing in place and pull the deal together, but we felt we had the right idea and could make a venue like this flourish.
“We benefitted from solid commercial advice, and believe that things are looking better economically and people are more willing to spend on a night out. We are optimistic about the future of Baroque.”
Caroline Entwistle, commercial property expert at Withy King, who helped the brothers negotiate the lease, commented: “We are seeing a definite growth in entrepreneurs’ confidence compared to 12 months ago. As well as large national chains, Bath is well positioned to offer opportunities for independent businesses. With the right commercial idea and experienced advisors on your side, there are certainly good deals to be had.”
Withy King also helped Baroque’s new owners with setting up a new company and resolving staff issues.
The Johnson brothers have undertaken substantial refurbishment of the venue, investing £20,000 on the lighting system alone. The club, which can currently accommodate up to 275 people, is expected to almost double in space and capacity when a quieter lounge area opens in spring 2012.
“We plan to cater to students and locals alike, with different themes to our Friday nights. With one of best dance floors available in Bath and private karaoke rooms the nightclub has something to offer to everyone,” said Rod.
